Nitrate in Drinking Water Could Raise Prostate Cancer Risk

Long-term exposure to nitrate in tap water and bottled water may be a risk factor for prostate cancer, a recent study has found. Overall, participants who had higher nitrate exposure via water were 3 times more likely to develop an aggressive prostate tumor than those with lower nitrate intake.

Nitrate is one of the most common contaminants found in drinking water and comes mainly from agricultural fertilizers and manure. It typically enters drinking water sources by means of rain that washes it into aquifers and rivers.

The study examined data on nitrate consumption for 697 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and compared it with data from a control group made up of 927 men aged 38-85 years. Not only were those with a high nitrate intake at more risk for aggressive prostate cancer, they were also 1.6 times more likely to develop low- or medium-grade prostate cancer.

On a more positive note, the researchers also found that diets rich in fiber, fruits, vegetables, and vitamin C appeared to offset the cancer risk associated with nitrate. In fact, men who consumed 11 grams or more of fiber per day did not have an increased cancer risk, even with higher nitrate intake.

Green Mediterranean Diet May Be Best for Weight Loss, Heart Health

Following a green Mediterranean diet appears to offer more benefits for heart health and weight loss than the traditional version, according to research published in the British Medical Journal. It also far surpassed the results achieved by those following a “standard” healthy diet.

In the study, 294 obese individuals were divided into three groups: one that followed basic healthy eating guidelines, one that followed the Mediterranean diet, and one that followed the green Mediterranean (green Med) diet.

The green Med group lost almost 2 pounds more than the Mediterranean group and 4 times the weight of the healthy diet group. The green Med group also lowered LDL “bad” cholesterol levels nearly 3 times more than the Mediterranean group and over 30 times more than the healthy dieters.

A traditional Mediterranean diet is low on simple carbs, rich in vegetables, and largely replaces red meat with poultry and/or fish. The green version includes higher quantities of plant foods, avoids red or processed meats altogether, adds several cups of green tea per day, and includes a high protein aquatic plant known as duckweed.

6 Powerful Benefits of Fiber— For Gut Health & Beyond

You probably know that dietary fiber is good for your digestive health, and it can indeed help keep you “regular” and decrease your risk of hemorrhoids or colorectal cancer. However, its benefits go far beyond the gut and include better blood sugar control, lower cholesterol levels, and reduced blood pressure. Fiber is also key to achieving a healthy weight and may even help you live longer by reducing your risk of dying from heart disease or cancer. (More)

People with Dementia Can Still Learn New Things

Though dementia can be a truly devastating disease, there’s reason to believe that it’s not the end of learning. Despite a common misconception that dementia patients become “empty shells”, some new research has found that even people with severe memory decline can learn a new activity on their own. In this case, the patients learned to use a tablet without any instruction from staff and even collaborated with other dementia patients in the process. (More)

Lupus Flare-ups Strongly Linked to Specific Gut Bacteria

Lupus is an inflammatory disease that involves the body’s own immune system attacking tissues. One of the biggest challenges for lupus sufferers is recurrent flare-ups that can be debilitating. A recent study has now uncovered a link between some lupus flare-ups and the bloom (increase) of a gut bacterium known as Ruminococcus blautia gnavus. Researchers believe this could lead to more findings on probiotics or dietary regimens that help specific lupus cases. (More)

Mental Flexibility Key to Dealing with Chronic Pain

Chronic pain affects around 20% of the adult population in many countries. According to a new study, the biggest struggle for many with chronic pain is not the pain intensity but rather how greatly it interferes with their daily lives and personal goals. This led the researchers from the study to conclude that mental or goal flexibility— the ability to adapt to difficulties and obstacles to still achieve things that matter— is critical for the wellbeing of chronic pain sufferers. Biggest GMO Foods to Watch Out For When You Shop

If you are trying to avoid genetically modified organisms (GMOs), there are some specific foods you should be particularly wary of. In the U.S., the top GMO crop is field corn (not sweet corn), which goes into many processed foods and drinks as cornstarch, corn syrup, etc. Not far behind corn are soybeans, sugar beets (used to make granulated sugar), canola, cotton, summer squash, potatoes, papaya, and alfalfa (livestock feed). Look for USDA Certified Organic foods or non-GMO Project verified foods to avoid genetic engineering. (More)
